THE LAWS OF THE KINGDOM Lecture 13.
THE LAW OF REDUCING INTEREST
INTRODUCTION.
Scripture setting Matthew 6:24-34
Note:
The key verse is verse 33:"Seek ye first the kingdom of God."
The Law of Reduced Interest can be boiled down to this: We
eliminate everything in our lives that doesn't add up to, or
relate to, the Kingdom of God. We don't have a lot of
things to worry about that we worried about before. We only
seek His Kingdom and then God begins to provide as He sees
fit.
1. Singleness of purpose
v24. "No man can serve two masters."
Here is the ultimatum: "No man can serve two masters: for
either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he
will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve
God and mammon."
Mammon could be defined as earthly interests: money, meat,
drink, clothing. If we establish an inner god, we are bound
to serve that god-first priority-loyalty-love. Cannot has
to do with ability - not desire. Once our desire is fixed,
our ability is limited.
To help us see the finality of that word cannot, note that
it is the same word that is used in John 3:5 where Jesus
told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot enter
the kingdom of God." We often glibly quote that verse, not
realising that Jesus placed the same distinction upon
advancement in the Kingdom as He did upon entrance into the
Kingdom. "Ye cannot serve two masters." So we must choose
one.
WE ONLY HAVE ONE MASTER. Matt.6:24.
A literal translation of this verse gives us a clearer view
of what Jesus is saying here,
"No man can be a slave to two owners"
We can now see the further thought in Matt.6:25
"Therefore I say unto you be not anxious."
The Roman slave owner was compelled by law to provide for
his slaves welfare, how much more to God! We are his
servants, He will-care for us.
Jesus is implying that in our relationships to God we have
no rights of our own. He is the undisputed master of our
lives. It is this that should put us at peace, because we
are His responsibility.
2. Simplicity of trust
v.25. " take no thought of ------------------- to verse 32
---- Your heavenly Father knoweth."
What Jesus is driving at! He wants to establish in us an
attitude of dependence that can accept the material
blessings without becoming independent and developing the
"Who needs God?" approach. Equally anxious is He for us to
come to the place where we do not always need to be in a
financial crisis to have a feeling of dependency.
God knows how to create dependence, as well as knowing how
to bring us to a security that is deep and lasting through
accepting the teachings of the Law of Reduced Interest. He
is working for eternal results rather than the temporal.
Paul, in 1 Timothy 6:8, says this: "And having food and
raiment let us be therewith content." If you can learn the
lesson of contentment, along with dependence upon Him as
Provider, He will bless you, Wisdom is needed in handling
all of His gifts. They are to be invested-not wasted! We
are not to "think money" for the sake of money, or what it
will gain for us personally-but we do have a responsibility.
We are to relate our thoughts to how money can serve Kingdom
purposes.
Do you remember Paul's saying, "I know both how to be
abased, and . . . to abound" (Philippians 4:12)? He had
become rightly related to "things," and having them, or not
having them, did not affect in any way his relationship to
his heavenly Father. This is what
NO PROBLEM OF PROVISION (MATT. 6:25-34).

Jesus is pressing us to have trust in Him. We are not to
worry In these ten verses Jesus sets out six different
arguments and defences against worry.
1. God gave us life (verse 25), therefore we can trust him to'
give us food to sustain it.
2. God looks after the birds, can't He look after us (verse 26)

It is not that the birds do not work. It has been said that
no-one works harder than the average sparrow to make a
living; the point that Jesus is making is that they do not
worry.
3. Worry anyway is useless (verse 27) It does not achieve a
single thing.

4. If God gives such beauty to a short-lived flower, how much
more will he care for men? (verse 30)

5. A Christian cannot worry because He believes in the Love of
God (verse 32)

6. Worry can be defeated by:
Concentrating on the kingdom of God (verse 33).............

This brings us to verse 33 and 34. After making it very
explicit what we are not to have uppermost in our thinking,
Jesus gives the positive command, "Seek ye first the kingdom
of God and his righteousness He, also, gives the
result of such thinking, and all these -things shall
be added unto you."
The food, the drink, and the clothing are -guaranteed to
those first seek the Kingdom. This is our aim in these
Bylaws: seeking to learn how to live and act and think as
Kingdom citizens. When we learn these lessons, here is our
assured reward: The Father will be looking out for our every
interest-wanting-waiting to supply our every need.
3 . Sincerity of intent.
V33 But seek ye first , the kingdom.,
Conclusion v.34.
Don't borrow tomorrows trouble ----------------
The interest rate is too high."
"Seek ye first . . . " Let me give you my translation of
this verse: "Reduce all your interests to this-seek first
the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added to
you." Notice "thing-s"-plural! Materialism has a mighty
strong pull. Jesus' words of warning at the opening of the
lesson were, "No man . . . Ye cannot!" (See v. 24.)
